sacred motherhood

there are layers of reasons why I call motherhood sacred…
Some of the layers are heavy and a little dark. They include loss and death and lots of grief. Other layers are light and are full of joy and redemption and hope.
There’s the magic, the mundane, and the mystery in it all.
One thing I know to be true: We need each other.
Motherhood (and childhood) are not meant to be lived out in isolation.
We are creatures created for community. My hope is to foster some of that community here.
I’ve been clinging to this poem written for me by my friend Yanelle:
“MOTHERHOOD AS A PRAYER
When I wake up in the middle of night
To the sound of little ones
Longing to be nurtured by my heart
May I remember that motherhood is a prayer
A Prayer of Devotion
As I daily pour into them
A prayer of Love
As I replenish myself in Abundance
A prayer of Creativity
As I make their heart my greatest work of Art
A prayer of Grace
As I lean in for support
A prayer of Generosity
As I allow myself to receive and give
A prayer of Laughter
As I reconcile with my inner child
A prayer of Forgiveness
As I part ways with guilt and shame
A prayer of Remembrance
As I rewrite the memories of my past
A prayer of Patience
As I build a friendship with Mercy
A prayer of Surrender
As I let go of my need for control
A prayer of Freedom
As I allow our lives to look different from others
A prayer of Renewal
As I get to embody the Divine in new ways
When I’m surrounded by chaos
Wildy interrupted by demands and request for my attention
May I daily practice
Motherhood as a prayer ”
